Cosmetic Whitening

Teeth whitening is a safe and effective treatment that can remove superficial stains, deeper staining or discolouration of teeth, leaving them whiter and brighter than before. It is best if teeth whitening is carried out by a dental professional and when carried out correctly is safe and pain free.

A healthy white smile is on just about everyone’s wish list. There are many reasons why teeth discolour or darken, some we can’t control such as age or trauma and others like lifestyle factors or even poor dental hygiene and health will make teeth appear darker.

Lifestyle factors include drinking tea, coffee, cola or wine, and smoking or chewing tobacco. Poor dental hygiene such as not brushing or flossing regularly or skipping professional dental cleanings can cause plaque and food stains to build up. Some diseases can cause tooth staining, as they don’t allow teeth to develop normally. Medications and certain mouth rinses can also contribute to tooth discolouration.

When teeth are damaged or injured due to physical trauma, the blood flow to the tooth slows down and the nerve dies and therefore over time darkens.

Although whitening is usually done for cosmetic reasons, we can guide you on what options you have for treating the type of staining you are experiencing. The best news is that in many cases reversing teeth staining is possible.

If teeth whitening is carried out by a dental professional it can be extremely effective and very safe, but it is important to consider that no two people will get the same results.

In-chair teeth whitening is performed firstly by covering the gums with a barrier to protect them and then the application of a tooth whitening gel containing 25-40 % hydrogen peroxide and activating and or accelerating the gel with a blue light, it can take between 30-90 mins depending on what treatment you require or select.

In short no, it is best to discuss what options are available to you with your dentist/hygienist. Things like crowns and porcelain veneers and white coloured tooth fillings are not able to change colour. The health of your teeth and gums will also be a deciding factor for teeth whitening as well.

Teeth whitening carried out by a dental professional is extremely safe for adults and older teens. The safest way to whiten teeth is to have your treatment done in-chair or have your dental team fit you with custom trays and follow correct instructions for at-home teeth whitening. All teeth whitening at dental clinics use TGA approved products that are safe and effective when used correctly.

After taking dental impressions of your teeth, we create custom fitted trays. These individually fitted trays are taken home with detailed instructions on how to add the gel. Our team will guide you through the process to ensure you achieve the best results at home.
